別称は青葉城。戦国時代は国分氏の居城で、千代城と称した。慶長5年から同15年にかけて (1600〜15年) 伊達政宗公が修復完成し、明治維新まで伊達氏の居城となった。建物は明治期の落雷と第二時世界大戦の仙台空襲で焼失。大手門隅櫓は戦後復興、石垣が現存。国指定史跡、日本城郭協会選定による「日本100名城」の一つ。

伊達政宗公期に造営された青葉山の本丸、宮城護国神社がある西の丸、二代伊達忠宗期に造営された二の丸 (現在は東北大川内南キャンパス)、仙台市立博物館がある三の丸 (東の丸)、付随する櫓、門からなる。JR仙台駅西口バスプールより15番3から「るーぷる仙台」に乗車し約22分、「仙台城跡」で下車。徒歩約3分。るーぷる仙台は時計回りでの運行しかないため、仙台城跡から仙台駅までの所要時間は約48分となる。
