Traquair House, plus manoir que château est la demeure ancestrale des comtes de Traquair, titre créé en 1633 pour John Stewart. La demeure actuelle date du XVIIe siècle, mais le château existait bien auparavant. Plusieurs rois d’Écosse y séjournèrent, dont Marie Stuart et son deuxième époux Lord Darnley en 1566 et Bonnie Prince Charlie en 1745. Lorsque le prince quitta la demeure pour s'enfuir, le cinquième comte jura de ne rouvrir Bear Gates, que lorsque un Stuart remonterait sur le trône d’Écosse, la grille d'honneur est donc toujours fermée.
